When booking a newborn photographer, it may seem easy at first because google will bring up several great options. But because of that, many terms like lifestyle newborn session, studio, lighting, etc. may cause you to feel a little overwhelmed. Here are some questions you can ask to make sure you find the right fit for you:

  1. When is the best time to book maternity photos or a newborn photo session?
  2. What do we wear to a newborn session?
  3. Do you use props?
  4. How long will it take to see my gallery?
  5. Why is it recommended for babies to be under two weeks for their newborn photo sessions?
  6. Can you come take newborn photos in my home?
  7. How long will the session be?

1. When is the best time to book maternity photos or a newborn photo session?

I recommend having photos taken of you around 30-34 weeks pregnant. You can also book your newborn session at this time. The best time to have images taken of your newborn baby is when they are 5-15 days old. I take on a limited amount of newborns in order to ensure that there is flexibility for your newborn session date, so it is okay if your baby comes early or late!

2. What do we wear to a newborn session?

Read the first paragraph of this blog to help you know exactly what to wear!

3. Do you use props?

Amato Photography does not use props! I document you and your baby throughout your session in a natural way, feeding him/her, rocking, etc. I will also provide some prompts and guidance to help you feel comfortable in front of the camera. This is considered a lifestyle newborn session. If you are looking for a newborn photographer with props, I recommend asking them for proof of safety training in order for you to make sure that they are trained to handle your precious baby with props and posing.

4. How long will it take to see my gallery?

Your full gallery will be sent via email on a digital platform within 3-4 weeks of your session time. You will be able to download all images at that time. I recommend saving them to multiple places. If you want to order prints or create your own album, you can order through Mpix. They have reasonable prices and the prints’ colors will match your photographer’s edits as well as the quality.

5. Why is it recommended for babies to be under two weeks for their newborn sessions?

Babies sleep A LOT when they first come earth side. This can be helpful for your lifestyle session. They also change so fast, so documenting how they look right away is a moment to treasure. A lot of times, babies may get baby acne after a couple weeks, therefore getting these photos taken earlier can help make sure you receive acne free photos.

6. Can you come take newborn photos in my home?

Absolutely, I would love to. I travel all over the Houston area for newborn sessions. These are typically held in the mornings for the natural, soft light to set the tone of your beautiful photos. I recommend clearing counters of extra items that may be distracting in the background. I also always share about picking a room with the most natural light (meaning the room with the most windows/natural light coming in). We can take these photos with you and your immediate family members and even your beloved pets!

7. How long will the session be?

This can take about 2-2.5 hours, but it also depends on how many breaks your baby may need. Which, speaking of breaks, it is absolutely okay for your baby to need time to eat, time to have his/her diaper changed, etc. Prepare yourself to give lots of grace and to have lots of patience, because I promise that this will be worth it! To further prepare for a newborn session, feel free to read a blog discussing outfits, lighting, and mentally preparing here.
